DON'T MISS: Last Train Home
with opening act Kevin Gordon. Two of the best CDs of 2005 that
not enough people heard were Last Train Home's "Bound
Away" and Kevin Gordon's "O Come Look At the
Burning." On Wednesday, both acts will be at Off Broadway
for a show that will reward fans of great playing and literate
songwriting. Led by former Washington Post writer Eric Brace, LTH
is a flexible outfit often numbering up to 10 players. The band's
original tunes can be sweet one moment and edgy the next, dressed
up in equal parts rock, country, blues and jazz. Kevin Gordon
will open the show solo, fresh from his full-band appearance June
9 at Twangfest. The Louisiana native is based in Nashville, but
his music is far from the sugar-coated, empty calories that mark
much of that town's radio fare. Instead, expect gritty,
blues-infused songs about life's battles, delivered with a poet's
attention to imagery and a rocker's attention to rhythm. 9 p.m.
(doors open at 8) Wednesday at Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.
$7. 314-773-3363.
